![]() Szabla agrees, saying, “With bans on NSFW I often see a lot of queer art, and queer folks who are trying to view or create this work in order to better connect with their own genders and identities, getting hit the hardest and losing business and income because of these overreaching decisions by tech companies.” “This is a huge blow to many marginalized communities, particularly queer, trans, sex worker, and kink/adult play spaces that rely on Discord for community and communication,” says writer Ana Valens, who has reported on Discord’s previous efforts to curb NSFW content. In addition to furries, other stigmatized groups use Discord as a platform for NSFW content. For starters, as many adult content creators noted, Discord’s change in policy regarding NSFW content is part of a larger trend of major social media platforms cracking down on NSFW content, most notably Tumblr, which served as a bastion of erotica for years before the website unceremoniously banned it.Įvery Awful Thing Trump Has Promised to Do in a Second Term The update, though small and largely unheralded save for a few cursory posts on tech blogs, was notable for a few reasons. We always work hard to create robust controls to help ensure minors are not exposed to content that is inappropriate for them,” the spokesperson said of the decision. “We are committed to ensuring a safer experience for everyone on Discord. ![]() It will still be possible for Discord users to access NSFW servers on its desktop version, and on Android. The update went on to state that entire servers, as opposed to individual channels, are required to be designated NSFW if the community “is organized around NSFW content or whose content is predominantly 18+,” a spokesperson for Discord told Rolling Stone. Join our community on Discord, find us on Twitch, Facebook, and Twitter, and subscribe to our Patreon for exclusive benefits. On Tuesday, the gaming chat platform Discord quietly updated its guidelines to restrict adult content, issuing a ban on users accessing NSFW servers (essentially, chatrooms with multiple channels) on iOS devices. For example, the Nerfwire server (that no self-respecting person should join at any costs) is allowed to run amok while our innocent little NSFW furry server with a mild fascist problem gets entirely shut down. There are many more problematic servers on Discord. There were surely a couple of fascists on our server, I’ll admit, but it still shouldn’t have been banned. I understand it looks bad having an NSFW channel dedicated solely to pictures of children, but come on, it was just cartoons. In my honest opinion, this is a blatant example of Discord’s notorious anti-furry bias. There was nothing actually problematic on our server besides a few blue jokes. Additionally, there has been a lot of fuss about the server-wide slogan “arbite macht frei” which is simply a cute way of saying that getting bit by a werewolf frees you from your flesh prison. Sure, there were scores of people in our server spamming “the ewes will not replace us,” but that was merely in protest to an overabundance of sheep porn. If Discord were to ban every server that engaged in edgy humor, then there wouldn’t be a single server left. ![]() Additionally, one of the server’s moderators who went by the username “Krystal Nyacht” was merely being ironic. What, are we expected to screen every member based on their ideology? While we did have threads with titles like “The Uwu-ish Question” and “The Voreth Reich,” they were obviously jokes. Look, all servers attract the occasional fascist. There are plenty of servers that cause serious and direct harm to countless people, but you had to go out of your way to ban my NSFW furry server “Breakfast at Yiffany’s.” Sure, we did share hundreds of terabytes of hardcore and incredibly niche pornography on this server, but all things considered, there really weren’t that many fascists on there. Come on, Discord, you’ve gone absolutely power crazy this time. ![]()
